Designed in 1964 by Denmark’s legendary and influential Verner Panton, the Verpan Fun 1WM is a beautiful wall lamp comprising three chrome rings from which are suspended varying lengths of individually linked mother-of-pearl discs. The unit has an unusual transparent cord with an integrated on/off switch. Verpan Fun shell lamps emit a wonderfully natural glow that brightens and elevates not only one’s home but one’s mood too. The slightest breath of wind causes the individual shells to oscillate, tinkling melodiously one against another whilst simultaneously shimmering with a delightful iridescence. Panton was a remarkable and irrepressible character whose first office was the back of his VW Camper (where he lived with his dog, Happy). His work is playful and optimistic and he was gifted with a wonderful, child-like imaginary vision. Post-Vietnam, however, these qualities began to be perceived as naïve (although discerning collectors continued to avidly acquire his work) and it wasn’t until his re-discovery by the post-modernists in the nineteen nineties that Panton’s huge contribution to the art of living beautifully was universally acknowledged. Panton died twelve days before the opening of a major retrospective celebrating his achievements in 1998. His work remains iconic and eternal – it is for the truly discerning investor.
